Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about buying, financing, and maintaining your outboard motor

🚀 Outboard Motors
What horsepower outboard do I need for my boat?

It depends on your boat's weight, length, and intended use. A general rule: 25–40 HP for small skiffs and jon boats; 75–150 HP for center consoles and bay boats; 200+ HP for offshore and larger vessels. The safest approach is to check your boat's US Coast Guard Capacity Plate for the maximum horsepower rating, then match your typical load and usage. Our sales team can help you find the perfect fit β€” call +1 (415) 882-6361 or visit us in San Francisco.

Should I buy a new or used outboard motor?

New motors offer the latest technology, full factory warranty, better fuel efficiency, and zero wear history. They're ideal if you plan to keep the motor long-term or use it commercially. Used motors can save 30–50% upfront and are great for budget-conscious buyers or backup motors. We sell certified pre-owned units that have been compression-tested, serviced, and carry a 90-day warranty. Ask us about both options β€” we'll help you decide based on your budget and needs.

What's the difference between two-stroke and four-stroke outboards?

Four-stroke motors are the modern standard β€” quieter, more fuel-efficient, cleaner emissions, and better for trolling. Two-stroke motors are lighter and simpler but less efficient and no longer sold new in the US due to emissions regulations. Most of our inventory is four-stroke, including Yamaha's V MAX SHO series which offers two-stroke-like performance with four-stroke efficiency. For recreational boating, we almost always recommend four-stroke.

How do I choose between Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, and Honda?

Each brand has strengths: Yamaha leads in reliability and resale value; Mercury dominates high-performance and racing; Suzuki offers the best fuel efficiency with Lean Burn Control; Honda is known for quiet operation and automotive-derived technology. The "best" brand depends on your boat, budget, and how you use it. As an authorized dealer for all four, we give unbiased advice β€” no brand pressure. Come in for a consultation and we'll match you to the right motor.

What shaft length do I need?

Shaft length is critical for proper performance. Measure from the top of your transom (where the motor mounts) to the bottom of the hull (not the keel). 15" (short) for 15–17" transoms; 20" (long) for 18–21" transoms; 25" (extra-long) for 22–25" transoms. The cavitation plate should sit 1–2 inches below the hull bottom. Wrong shaft length causes ventilation, poor handling, and motor damage. When in doubt, bring your boat in β€” we'll measure for free.

How often should I service my outboard motor?

Follow the manufacturer's schedule, typically: Every 100 hours or annually β€” whichever comes first. Key services include oil and filter changes, water pump impeller replacement (every 2 years or 200 hours), gear lube changes, spark plug inspection, fuel filter replacement, and anode checks. Saltwater use requires more frequent maintenance. We offer maintenance packages that bundle services at a discount β€” ask about our Annual Service Plan.

Can I use ethanol fuel in my outboard?

Most modern outboards handle E10 (10% ethanol) fine, but never use E15 or higher β€” it will damage your motor. Ethanol attracts moisture, which causes phase separation and corrosion. Best practices: use a 10-micron fuel/water separating filter, add fuel stabilizer every fill-up, and avoid letting ethanol fuel sit unused for more than 30 days. For motors stored long-term, drain the fuel system or use ethanol-free fuel. We stock Yamaha, Mercury, and Racor filtration systems.

πŸ“¦ Shipping
How much does shipping cost?

Parts & Accessories: $9.99 flat rate standard shipping (3–5 business days). Free shipping on orders over $500. Expedited (2-day) is $19.99; overnight calculated at checkout. Outboard Motors: Freight shipping calculated based on destination, motor weight, and delivery method (residential vs. commercial dock). Typical range: $150–$800 for domestic US. International shipping (including to Mexico, Canada, and overseas) quoted individually β€” email info@aquamrineoutboard.com with your destination for a precise quote.

How long does shipping take?

In-stock parts: Same-day shipping if ordered before 2 PM PST (Mon–Fri). Delivery 3–5 business days standard, 2 days expedited. In-stock motors: 5–10 business days for crating and freight delivery. Factory-ordered motors: 4–12 weeks depending on model and season. International: Ocean freight 18–24 days to major ports; air freight 5–7 days. You'll receive tracking within 24 hours of shipment.

Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico?

Yes. Alaska & Hawaii: Parts ship via USPS Priority or FedEx (5–8 business days). Motors ship via ocean freight to major ports (2–3 weeks). Puerto Rico: Parts ship USPS or FedEx International (5–7 days). Motors ship to San Juan port via ocean freight (10–14 days). Additional freight surcharges apply for non-contiguous US β€” calculated at checkout or quoted via email.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes β€” we regularly ship to Canada, Mexico, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. International orders require: commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and bill of lading. The buyer is responsible for import duties, taxes, and customs clearance in the destination country. We coordinate freight forwarding and can recommend customs brokers. Contact us at info@aquamrineoutboard.com with your destination port for a detailed quote including crating, freight, and documentation.

How are outboard motors packaged for shipping?

All motors are shipped in professional marine-grade crates with: foam padding and bracing, moisture barrier wrapping, corner protectors, and steel banding. Crates are ISPM-15 certified for international shipping. Each crate includes handling instructions and "This Side Up" markings. For container loads, motors are blocked and braced to prevent movement. Photos of crating are available upon request. Insurance is included for full replacement value during transit.

Can I pick up my order instead of shipping?

Absolutely. Same-day pickup is available at our San Francisco showroom for in-stock parts and most motors. Order online or by phone and select "Will Call" at checkout. We'll have your order ready within 2 hours (parts) or by next business day (motors requiring prep). Our address: 1428 Wallace Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124. Hours: Mon–Fri 9 AM–6 PM, Sat 9 AM–2 PM. Bring a valid ID and your order confirmation.

What if my shipment arrives damaged?

Document everything before signing: Take photos of the damaged packaging and contents. Note damage on the delivery receipt (BOL) before signing. Contact us within 24 hours at +1 (415) 882-6361 or info@aquamrineoutboard.com. We file the freight claim and ship a replacement immediately β€” you never pay for shipping damage. All shipments include full transit insurance. Do not refuse delivery unless the entire crate is destroyed; instead, accept with damage noted and we'll handle the rest.

πŸ’³ Payments & Financing
What payment methods do you accept?

We accept: Cash (in-store only), Credit/Debit Cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover), Wire Transfer / Bank Deposit (preferred for international and large orders), PayPal (+4% processing fee), and Financing (apply in-store or online). For motor purchases over $5,000, we recommend wire transfer to avoid credit card processing limits. Business checks accepted from established accounts with prior approval.

Do you offer financing?

Yes β€” we offer multiple financing options: Standard Loans (24–72 months, rates from 2.99% APR), Seasonal Payment Plans (pay during operating months, skip off-season), Commercial Fleet Financing (bulk purchases, custom terms), and Lease-to-Own programs. We work with Sheffield Financial, Yamaha Financial Services, Mercury Finance, Honda Financial Services, and Suzuki Finance. Pre-qualify online in minutes with no credit impact, or call +1 (415) 882-6361 to speak with a financing specialist.

What credit score do I need to qualify?

We work with all credit types. Excellent credit (750+): Best rates, starting at 2.99% APR. Good credit (700–749): Competitive rates, 4.9–6.9% APR. Fair credit (650–699): Approved with moderate rates, 8.9–12.9% APR. Poor credit (below 650): Subprime programs available, higher rates or larger down payment may be required. No credit / first-time buyer: Co-signer options and first-time buyer programs. Pre-qualification uses a soft pull and won't hurt your score β€” apply here.

How much down payment is required?

Standard financing: 10–20% typical, but $0 down options exist for qualified buyers. Subprime / challenged credit: 20–30% may be required. Commercial fleet: 10–15% standard, negotiable for established businesses. Trade-in: Your trade-in value counts as down payment β€” many customers cover their entire down payment this way. A larger down payment lowers your monthly payment and may improve your rate. Use our payment calculator to see how different down payments affect your monthly cost.

Can I pay off my loan early?

Most of our lending partners allow early payoff with no penalty, including Sheffield Financial, Yamaha Financial Services, and Honda Financial Services. Some promotional rate programs (e.g., 0% intro) may have restrictions β€” ask your financing specialist before signing. Paying early reduces your total interest paid and builds your credit. Contact your lender directly for a payoff quote, or call us and we'll coordinate.

Do you offer seasonal payment plans for businesses?

Yes β€” our Seasonal Payment Plans are designed for charter operators, fishing guides, tour boats, and seasonal marinas. You make full payments during your operating months (e.g., April–October) and $0 payments during off-season (November–March). Interest accrues during skip months and is paid as a lump sum or rolled into the next season. Terms from 3–7 years. Requires business documentation (tax returns, bank statements, insurance). Learn more about commercial financing or call +1 (415) 882-6361.

Is there a sales tax?

California customers: Sales tax applies based on your delivery/pickup location, typically 8.5–10.25%. If you have a valid resale certificate (for business purchases), tax is waived. Out-of-state customers: No California sales tax if shipped outside CA. You may owe use tax in your home state β€” consult your tax advisor. International customers: No US sales tax on exports. Import duties and VAT in your destination country are your responsibility. We provide all documentation needed for customs.

πŸ”„ Returns & Warranty
What is your return policy?

Parts & Accessories: Unopened, unused items in original packaging may be returned within 30 days for a full refund minus a 10% restocking fee. Opened or used parts are non-returnable unless defective. Electrical parts (starters, alternators, ignition components) are non-returnable once installed. Special order parts are non-returnable β€” we'll confirm this before ordering. Outboard Motors: New motors can be returned within 7 days if unused and in original crate (20% restocking fee + return freight). Used motors are sold as-is unless otherwise stated. To initiate a return: Call +1 (415) 882-6361 for an RMA number.

What warranty comes with new outboard motors?

All new motors carry the manufacturer's limited warranty: Yamaha: 3 years limited (extendable to 5 years). Mercury: 3 years limited (extendable). Suzuki: 3 years limited (5 years on select models). Honda: 5 years limited (best in class). Warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship. They do NOT cover: damage from improper maintenance, saltwater corrosion without proper care, use of non-OEM parts, or damage from accidents/neglect. Warranty is transferable to subsequent owners (registration required). International warranty coverage varies by manufacturer β€” ask us for details.

Do you offer extended warranties?

Yes. We offer Yamaha Extended Service (YES), Mercury Product Protection, and third-party extended warranties through SquareTrade and Assurant. Extended warranties add 2–4 years of coverage beyond the factory warranty and often include: priority service, loaner motors during repairs, towing reimbursement, and trip interruption coverage. Pricing varies by motor model and coverage level β€” typically $300–$1,500. Ask your sales consultant about adding extended coverage at purchase (it's cheaper than buying later).

What if my motor has a warranty issue?

Step 1: Call us at +1 (415) 882-6361 or email service@aquamrineoutboard.com. Describe the symptoms and provide your serial number. Step 2: We diagnose the issue. If it's a warranty claim, we handle all paperwork with the manufacturer. Step 3: We repair or replace the defective part at no cost to you. Loaner motors are available for commercial customers with priority service plans. Important: Warranty repairs must be performed by an authorized dealer (like us) using genuine OEM parts. DIY repairs void the warranty.

Do you warranty your service work?

Yes. All service performed by our factory-certified technicians carries a 90-day workmanship warranty. If the same issue recurs within 90 days due to our repair, we fix it free of charge β€” parts and labor included. This is in addition to any manufacturer parts warranty. Repower installations carry a 1-year installation warranty covering rigging, controls, and mounting. Maintenance services (oil changes, impeller replacements) are warrantied for 30 days or 25 hours of operation, whichever comes first.

Can I return a special order part?

No β€” special order parts are non-returnable. A "special order" is any part we don't stock and must order specifically for you from the manufacturer or distributor. We'll always tell you before placing a special order. To avoid issues: (1) Verify your part number using your motor's serial number, (2) Ask us to confirm fitment before ordering, (3) Consider ordering in-stock alternatives when available. If a special order part arrives defective or incorrect due to our error, we'll replace it at no charge.

Do I need an appointment to visit?

Sales & Parts: No appointment needed during business hours. Walk in anytime β€” our showroom and parts counter are open to the public. Service: Appointments recommended but not required for minor services (oil changes, diagnostics). Repower and major installations: Appointment required β€” call +1 (415) 882-6361 to schedule. Financing consultations: Walk-ins welcome, but calling ahead ensures a specialist is available. Trade-in evaluations: Call ahead so we can allocate time for a thorough inspection.

Do you service motors you didn't sell?

Yes. Our factory-certified technicians service all major outboard brands regardless of where you purchased. We see motors bought online, from other dealers, and even private-party purchases. As an authorized dealer, we have access to genuine parts, factory service bulletins, and warranty support (if applicable). However, warranty repairs must be performed by an authorized dealer for the manufacturer to honor the claim β€” another reason buying from an authorized dealer like us protects your investment.

Can I trade in my old outboard motor?

Yes β€” we accept trade-ins on all major brands. Bring your motor in for a free evaluation, or send us clear photos (port side, starboard side, transom mount, serial number plate) for a preliminary estimate. Trade-in value depends on: year, model, hours, compression, cosmetics, and market demand. We accept running and non-running motors. Your trade-in value applies as a down payment on your new motor or can be paid out by check. Learn more about our Trade-In + Finance Combo.

Do you offer price matching?

Yes. Show us a lower advertised price from an authorized dealer for the exact same model (same HP, shaft length, and features) and we'll match it. The competitor must have the item in stock and available for immediate delivery. We do NOT match prices from: unauthorized gray market sellers, auction sites (eBay), private sellers, or deals that include bundled services we can't verify. Price match requests must be made before purchase β€” we cannot retroactively adjust pricing.

How do I know if a part fits my motor?

The foolproof way: Give us your motor's serial number (located on the mounting bracket or cowling). We'll look up the exact part number in the manufacturer's database. Alternative: Provide your motor's brand, model, horsepower, and year β€” we can cross-reference with 95%+ accuracy. Propeller sizing: We need motor HP, shaft length, and your boat's hull type/weight. When in doubt, call us before ordering β€” we'd rather spend 2 minutes verifying than have you receive the wrong part. Wrong parts ordered without verification are subject to standard return policy.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes β€” Aqua Marine Outboard Gift Cards are available in denominations from $25 to $5,000. Perfect for the boater in your life who "has everything" (except that new propeller they've been eyeing). Gift cards can be used for: motors, parts, accessories, service labor, and maintenance packages. They never expire and are transferable. Purchase in-store or call +1 (415) 882-6361 to order by phone β€” we'll mail a physical card or email a digital version.

How can I track my order?

You'll receive a tracking number via email within 24 hours of shipment. Track directly with the carrier (FedEx, UPS, USPS, or freight company). For motor shipments, we also provide the freight company's direct contact and your BOL (Bill of Lading) number. Lost your tracking email? Call us at +1 (415) 882-6361 or email info@aquamrineoutboard.com with your order number β€” we'll resend it immediately. For large freight shipments, the carrier will call you 24 hours before delivery to schedule a window.
